Kickstarter Spotlight: Revenger One Shot

Revenger by Charles Forsman is sort of a thing. In just a few hours, the Kickstarter campaign for the special 44 page Revenger One Shot has reached it’s 7 day goal and then some! Currently, it’s at $2,537(2,000 goal). If Pam Grier’s Coffy and Charles Bronson had a love child that was raised by Dirty Harry, it would be Forsman’s protagonist in Revenger. I really enjoy Forsman’s odd, quirky characters and how much care he puts into choreographing his fight scenes(and there’s a lot of fighting!) Reading Revenger is like discovering some great “lost” 80’s indy action comic, but better, because a new issue comes out every month(just about..).      The first […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: Identity: A Comic Anthology

Identity: A Comic Anthology is a collection of 3 page comics by Northside Comics(an artists collective based out of Chicago), all dealing with the broad theme of one’s identity. The campaign has reached it’s goal of $2,000 already with 6 days left, but I thought it was worth sharing because for one, I’m a sucker for indy anthologies and two, there are some important stretch goals worth mentioning. If they can get to $2,500 they can print this 44 page comic on better paper stock and nicer paper quality. Now, at $3,000 you can help them “kick-start” their next anthology, plus every backer will receive a digital copy of the next book; what […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: Grayhat: A Weird Western #2

I like the artwork for this one, so I thought I’d share! This Kickstarter campaign is for the 2nd issue of Grayhat: A Weird Western comic book inspired by Sergio Leone’s “spaghetti westerns”, Moebius, and H.P. Lovecraft. Grayhat is intended to be a 5 issue series, but it appears that folks are still waiting for #1 from the previous Kickstarter campaign, so “pledger beware”.                      It might be worth the risk, though, because artist Jason Beirens work looks very promising and it looks like a fun concept! You can get both issues if you missed out on the first campaign and for 20 bucks you also […]

SDCC Panel Notes: Fund My Comic

I found this SDCC panel very informative, and interesting. It was all about how to get your comics project funded on Kickstarter, and I’m sure that many of the strategies discussed would also work on other crowd-funding sites. So, I thought I’d share some of my mental notes of what I learned. Enjoy!     read more…

Kickstarter Spotlight: American Nature Presents Anthology Comic + Shirt + Record by Greg & Fake

A few years ago, a friend of mine was visiting the Chicago area, and being such a generous person, they decided to buy me something at a local comics shop there. What I was presented with, upon their return, was a curious piece of art rendered on a piece of cardboard. It was a colorful, and booty-ful representation of a female Iron Fist by a couple of artists named Greg & Fake. I imagined a couple of street artists living under a bridge making this exceptionally unique art with whatever scraps they can rummage, probably while tripping balls on some sort of substance. Well, I have no idea if that’s […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: Speculative Relationships

Speculative Relationships: A Sci-fi Romance Comics Anthology is a promising looking comics project, currently with 10 days left on Kickstarter. Isabella Rotman of Animal Sex fame contributed a story to this, plus a lot of other great looking artists/cartoonists. The basic idea of the project is to revive the spirit of old 1950’s romance comics by way of telling compelling, contemporary romance stories in a science-fiction setting. Some of the other contributors involved with this anthology are Mike Manomivibul, Daniel Warren Johnson, Rinko Endo, Scott Kroll(co-editor), and Tyrell Cannon(co-editor).   For a 15 dollar pledge you get the 80 page book mailed to you(in the U.S.), which is a great deal considering how much you pay for […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: World War 3 Illustrated 1979-2014 Hardcover Anthology

World War 3 Illustrated comics magazine has been an institution of graphic art journalism & editorial cartooning for 35 years, and I’m happy to finally see a full-color hardcover collection of this work is finally being released!  That is, of course, with all of our help, as PM Press has raised just over half of their Kickstarter goal, so far.  Edited by Peter Kuper & Seth Tobocman, World War 3 has been publishing cutting edge comix journalism, and political/social criticism since it was founded in 1979.  For instance, comics legend Art Spiegelman found a welcome home for his criticism of our country’s post 9-11 eagerness to go to war, when having […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: COMIX BREW: A Free Comics Newspaper

I just read about this on Bleeding Cool, and I had to share it, because obviously the title of this Kickstarter campaign is a natural fit here.  Noah Van Sciver, writer & artist of the Fantagraphics graphic novel Hypo: The Melancholic Young Lincoln and contributor to many comics anthologies in recent years, has launched a campaign for a new free comics newspaper based out of Denver, CO called COMIX BREW.  I’m a big fan of anthologies in general, and some of the best cutting edge comics can be found in these regional free comix newspapers like Desert Island’s Smoke Signal, and Floating World Comics’ Diamond, and so many more! It’s […]

Kickstarter Spotlight: Red Hot Rebellion II

In the great tradition of fusing comics with rock & roll, like Bill Sienkiewicz’s tribute to Hendrix in the Voodoo Child GN, and Weird Tales of the Ramones box set, we have a new Kickstarter offering called Red Hot Rebellion II that combines a fun, sci-fi comic book with a new music album.  I enjoyed the highly entertaining pitch video; especially the disturbing “little girl” part.  These guys have a lot of spirit, and enthusiasm for their project! The campaign is for paying to get the comic-book done, and the rest of their album recorded.  They’ve brought on some established comics pros to help them, like Scrap/Seven Sisters artist, Chris […]
