I’ve only “experienced” Gnartoons #1 by the so called James the Stanton, but after that lovely cotton candy acid trip, I think I’ll have to order some more of Mr. the Stanton’s extremely limited edition zines/comix. In fact, Gnartoons #1 is currently out of print, so I wouldn’t hesitate to order some of this guy’s comix, because many of them might evaporate soon! Gnartoons reads like a stream of consciousness, underground comic that is more from the point of view of the animals, and monsters than their human character counterparts. The artwork is vibrant, and alive. I’d recommend Gnartoons on the visuals alone, but I enjoyed the writing as well, including Part 1 of the lead feature, called Subterfuge, which was like a mash up of Jim Woodring’s Frank, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hopefully there will be a Gnartoons presence at this year’s L.A. Zinefest, but you can always order James the Stanton’s comix online here.
