Top 5 Comics Pull List – September 2015 Previews – in shops November 2015

5. Klaus #1(of 6) by Grant Morrison & Dan Mora – BOOM! Studios

Grant Morrison and hot new artist Dan Mora(of Hexed fame!) bring us a darker Santa Claus origin story, based on lesser known Viking lore, ancient tales of magic, and fan-favorite Krampus!

Klaus #1

4. 8House #6: Mirror part 1 of 4 by Emma Rios and Hwei Lim – Image Comics

The Brandon-Graham-verse marches on with more outstanding talent for the 4 part Mirror. Emma Rios takes on writing duties here with art by someone new to me, Hwei Lim. You can sample some of Lim’s illustrations and comics here, including a colorful strip about a girl and a bunny called Boris and Lalage.

3. The Goddamned #1 by Jason Aaron & R.M. Guéra – Image Comics

The original Scalped team is back together for a new Image ongoing that imagines a cruel, brutal world pre-biblical flood. This sounds like some nasty, all out, balls to the wall fun! Sign me up!!

The Goddamned #1

2. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 by Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare  & Natacha Bustos – Marvel

I have to admit that I rolled my eyes when I first saw the announcement that Moon Boy was being “replaced” by a new female character in the upcoming Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur series. It just seems like every day we’re hearing about another character “going female”, but after I got out of my old, tired, jaded comic reader haze, I realized that this new take on the Jack Kirby classic looks great!

I’m a big fan of what Reeder & Montclare are doing on Rocket Girl over at Image, so I’m looking forward to see where they take these characters. Also, the artist Natacha Bustos is really talented from the little I’ve seen from her; just go check out her gorgeous interiors on the brand new Spider Woman #10!

Speaking of the new “Women of Marvel”, Silk, Spider Woman, Ms. Marvel, Thor, and the new Wolverine all have new #1’s this month that look very good, as well.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1

1. Zap Comix #16 by Robert Crumb, Victor Moscoso, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, Gilbet Shelton, Spain Rodriguez, Rick Griffin, Paul Mavrides & more! – Fantagraphics Books

So, this choice for top spot was easy for me.

The first new issue of Zap in over a decade(and apparently the last), all 8 original Zap artists are represented here, plus 16 pages of color comics(first time for an issue of Zap Comix), three double-page jams by the legendary Zap-alumns, and a new cover by Crumb!

*note: it looks like this issue was previously available only in the Complete Zap Comix Boxed Set. Well, this is a much cheaper option, for sure!

Zap Comix #16

Honorable Mentions:

Alternative Comics is back with a dandy looking anthology titled Alternative Comics Are Dead(say it ain’t so!) featuring the talents of Sam Alden, John Porcellino, Leslie Stein, Jeffrey Brown, Noah Van Sciver, Lauren Weinstein, Malachi Ward, and many more!

I have to mention that there’s a new James Bond comic by Warren Ellis, published by Dynamite–should be fun!

Also, some of the DC Looney Tunes variants look like they could be fun to chase after!
